VoIPshield: Three Microsoft VoIP, UC Products Are Susceptible to Attack

A Canada-based VoIP security solutions company is reporting that it’s detected vulnerabilities in three Microsoft products that deliver VoIP, presence, instant messaging and audio-video-Web conferencing functionality.

Officials at VoIPshield Laboratories – the research division of Ottawa’s VoIPshield Systems Inc. – say that Office Communications Server 2007, Office Communicator and Windows Live Messenger, applications that use media stream protocols such as RTP, or “Real-time Transport Protocol,” are susceptible. RTP is a popular standardized packet format for delivering audio and instant messaging over the Internet.

When It Comes to VoIP, Beware Of The Weak Spots

Back in February, when little-known VoIPshield Systems sent a report to Cisco Systems (NSDQ:CSCO), Avaya (NYSE:AV) and Nortel (NYSE:NT) detailing vulnerabilities in their VoIP technologies, the three largest IP-PBX vendors on the market shrugged off the report and never responded.

The vendors began cooperating and acknowledging on their Web sites of the risks to their VoIP systems—only after VoIPshield continued reporting the vulnerabilities publicly. Nortel attributed a vulnerability to VoIPshield on April 10, for example.
